From Continuo magazine, June 1995:

J. S. Bach: Compositions for Transverse Flute Kim Pineda, transverse flute, Elisabeth Wright, harpsichord, Elisabeth Reed, violoncello

"Pineda's recording is in many ways more traditional. He presents a well-known and oft-recorded body of work in a standard studio setting, but he and his collaborators do their job well. No recording of Bach's flute sonatas can avoid the issue of attribution, since some of the works once bearing Bach's name have recently been considered spurious. Pineda performs the five works considered authentic by the editors of the Neue Bach Ausgabe, namely the Sonatas in B minor, A major, E major, and E minor, and the solo Partita in A minor. It is also worth noting that Pineda plays each work at a very low pitch standard of A-392. Pineda, a doctoral student at Indiana University who has concertized extensively throughout the United States, plays in a manner that is direct and energetic. In general his tempos are brisk and his manner in movements such as the Adagio ma non tanto of the E major Sonata or the Largo e dolce of the B minor Sonata is scintillating rather than singing, but his playing is also consistently well-controlled and well-balanced and he makes his approach convincing. He is at his most impressive in the most difficult movements, such as the Presto of the B minor Sonata or the Allemande of the Partita, where his neat finger work and clear forward momentum give coherence to movements that can sound unfocussed. The general listener may wish for a little more poetry in Pineda's interpretations, but flute players will find much to ponder and enjoy. Wright and Reed each support Pineda admirably. Focus' presentation is good, with clean, slightly distant sound and detailed program notes."
